Missouri Shorthorn Association Meeting minutes 6/14/25
1) Call to Order-meeting was called to order by President Jose Cruz at 10:23 am at the Taylor Youth Building during the MCA Jr All Breeds Show. Around 40 people were in attendance.
2) Old Business-there was none
3) Treasurer’s Report-John H. reported $20,085.38 in the account and a CD balance of $5,261.25
a. Brett N moved and Sarah 2nd that John H. have discretion to move the CD and account after discussion of issues with the current bank and CD rates, etc.
4) Mo Jr Shorthorn Assoc-
a. Clint Youse said 21 kids from 10 families with 35 head are heading to Grand Island, NE next weekend for Shorthorn Jr Nationals show. Thanked the t-shirt sponsors and those who bought hats for monetary donations to the juniors.
b. State Fair buckles and banners have been ordered-MSA will make up the difference on covering the cost of those.
5) Membership/Ambassador Program
a. Up from 71 members last year to 91 currently-still striving for 100!
b. Ambassadors up to 32 from 30 last year
6) Industry Partner Program-we currently have 24 and would like to grow that-please reach out to any industry partners you deal with to try and gain interest.
7) Membership Directory-
a. 1500 were printed, 1034 mailed, 466 to be distributed-copies were available
8) MSA Sales
a. Spring Sale Results and Revenue- Brett N sale average per head was up $300-400, even though number of lots were down
b. Schabbings had the highest selling heifer for the 2nd year in a row
c. Fall Sale set for October 21, 2025 and Spring Sale March 31, 2026
d. Mid August entry forms available for fall sale-reminder anyone selling a bull will need to get DNA asap as it takes 5-7 weeks to get results
9) State Fair Sponsorships-sign up sheets were available at the meeting
10) State Fair Show
a. Staff-Bill B will announce the open show and be the head of that committee
b. Stalling-Bill will help with that as well-make sure to try and be considerate of others on space needs in order to get as many in the barn as we can.
11) State Fair Meeting & Meal
a. Jose confirmed meeting Saturday August 16th @ 3:30 in Taylor Woods Youth Center-booked MO Cattlemen’s for the meal.
12) MSA Committee-committee sheets were available for sign up-need all the help we can get
13) MSA Website/Facebook-also looking for more volunteers to help keep the website and Facebook page updated.
14) MSA 5013C status-John H. stated that to be chartered as a non-profit to make ourselves more attractive for corporate donations, we need to get this done. Have already previously approved $850 for 72 page application, just need to get it done.
15) MSA 2025-27 Board Elections were held: Jose and Janet were retained as board members and Michelle Schabbing was voted on as the new board member, replacing Kyle Dameron whose term had expired.
16) Ozark Empire info-Stewarts held a discussion about the Ozark Empire Fair not allowing a Shorthorn Plus breed category in their show. She has tried to contact them in regard to this, but not much luck. If anyone else would like to try, feel free. Last year had 26 head of Shorthorns, so that took us off probation.
Meeting was adjourned @ 11:22 am.
Officer meeting was held after the MSA meeting to confirm board member votes and elect new officers. The officer slate was chosen as:
Jose Cruz-President
Michelle Schabbing- Vice President
John Hendrickson- Treasurer
Beverly Henke- Secretary
The 2025 Breeder of the Year votes were also tallied and will be announced at the Shorthorn Open Show at the MO State Fair.
